Indian Boxer Vijender Kumar Gets Third Medal (Bronze)

Vijender Kumar ensured India of its Third individual medal by entering the Semi final bout of the 75Kg Boxing event at the Beijing Olympics. He played against the Cuban boxer today in the Semifinals and lost 8-5 in the four rounds.

He has secured the bronze medal, the third medal so far for India. He played a very defensive game against the Cuban who was very aggressive and was attacking Vijender and getting points in every round. Vijender did his best to defend himself and played a good game, but lost the bout.

He has made all the Indians proud with his feat of reaching this far and getting the Bronze medal home. Whole of India was tuned into the television channels to watch the bout live, including Bhiwani, the place where he trained to be a boxer and where his parents stay.

Sushil Kumar Brings Glory to India with the Second Medal (Bronze) - Breaking News

Sushil Kumar took part in the 66Kg freestyle wrestling event at the Beijing Olympics today. He had the first bout of the day against Dawn of USA whom he defeated 2-1 very easily, although a close match. His next bout was against the wrestler from Kazakistan for the Bronze medal. He defeated his opponent in the last bout winning India the Second medal, a bronze in the medal tally. Sushil Kumar has taken everyone by surprise, as nobody was really expecting anything from this quarter. All eyes were always on the better sportsmen of other sports like tennis, badminton, boxing and shooting. But, most of the other sportsmen, and women have disappointed India by their below par performance so far at Beijing. Sushil Kumar will no doubt be the second hero to come home to a grand welcome.

The other hopefuls yet are Vijender and Jitender in the Boxing events that are to take place in a short while. Let's see if India can get any more medals in its kitty! We wish them all the best!

Beijing Olympic Games 2008 Begins - Watch Video

Beijing Olympic Games 2008 Begins - Watch Video

The Beijing Olympic Games 2008 opening ceremony was a spectacular show of colors, art, culture and tradition of China which culminated in a magnificent display of fireworks over the Bird's Nest national stadium today.

I was thoroughly impressed with the whole idea of the cultural display of China around the centerpiece of a paper scroll that depicted the ancient history of chinese art of paper making. All the participants flowed in the stadium with utter precision and synchronisation throughout the performance, in a breathtaking array of colors, dance and music that enthralled all the audience.

There were enough fireworks after every performance to light up the skies of Beijing throughout the night and remind the world that they were the one's who invented them. And did they use them most effectively. It was the most magnificent, and colorful display ever seen on such a large magnitude by any country so far.

China has proved to the whole world of its might and magnificence by this display, which is the greatest ever in the history of Olympics so far!

The Opening ceremony concluded with the President of China, Hu Jintao declaring the 29th Olympic Games Open. This was followed by hoisting the Olympic flag and a spectacular Olympic torch lighting ceremony ending with the fireworks in whole of Beijing.

The Indian Squad For the Beijing Olympics 2008

The Indian Squad For the Beijing Olympics 2008

India has been sending its athletes and other sports persons regularly in the Olympic Games. This year it has prepared a 57- member squad for the Beijing Olympics 2008 Games. So far, India has not achieved much in the medals tally, other than a few bronze medals and some silver medals. No gold medals at all. Surprisingly, the men's hockey team will not be included this time as they failed to qualify for the games for the first time. Now that is a shame!

Here is a list of the squad that has been chosen to represent India in the Beijing Olympics 2008 Games.

Archery: Dola Banerjee, Pranitha Vardhineni, L Bombayala Devi, Mangal Singh Champia.

Athletics: Anju Bobby George (Long Jump), Krishna Poonia (Discus), Harwant Kaur (Discus), Preeja Sreedharan (10,000m), Manjit Kaur (400m), Chitra Soman (4×400m relay), Sini Jose (4×400m relay), MR Poovamma (4×400m relay), Mandeep Kaur (4×400m relay), S Geeta (4×400m relay), K Mridula (4×400m relay), J J Shobha (Heptathlon), Sushmita Singh Roy (Heptathlon), G G Pramila (Heptathlon), Vikas Gowda (Discus), Renjith Maheswary (Triple Jump), Surender Singh (10000m).

Badminton: Anup Sridhar, Saina Nehwal

Boxing: Jitender (51kg), Akhil Kumar (54kg), A L Lakhra (57kg), Vijender(75kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81kg)

Judo: Khumujam Tombi Devi, Divya. Rowing: Bajrang Lal Takhar (Single M1X), Devnder Khandwal and Manjeet Singh (Light Weight Double Scull).

Shooting: Manavjit Singh Sandhu (Clay Pigeon Trap), Mansher Singh (Clay Pigeon Trap), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (Clay Pigeon Double Trap), Gagan Narang (10m Air Rifle), Abhinav Bindra (10m Air Rifle), Samresh Jung (10m Air Pistol), Sanjeev Rajput (50m Rifle 3 Position), Anjali Bhagwat (50m Rifle 3 Position), Avneet Kaur Sidhu (10m Air Rifle).

Swimming: Virdawal Khade (50m, 100m, 200m Freestyle), Ankur Poseria (100m Butterfly), Sandeep Sejwal (100m, 200m Breaststrokes), Rehan Poncha (200m butterfly).

Table Tennis: Achanta Sharath Kamal, Neha Aggarwal.

Tennis: Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi (doubles), Sania Mirza (singles and doubles), Sunitha Rao (doubles). Weightlifting: L Monika Devi (69kg)

Wrestling: Sushil Kumar (66 kg Freestyle), Yogeshwar Dutt (60 kg Freestyle), Rajiv Tomar (120 kg Freestyle).

Yachting: Major NS Johal (Heavyweight Dinghy).

Apparently, our best chances of a medal lie with the boxers, shooters, archery, and probably the tennis players (Sania, and Leander Paes).

Anju Bobby George, had been pretty close to a medal in her long jump in the last Olympic games. But this year she is unable to match even her own record. Will she do anything this time? Only time will tell.

Well, our best wishes to the Indian Squad to do their best and make India proud.
